Lesson 02 — Ontario Road Signs

Master the colours, shapes and meanings of every road sign category used by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

⚠ Why this matters

20 of the 40 G1 test questions are on road signs. Get them right and you're already halfway to a pass.

2) Common regulatory signs

  • STOP — red octagon. Full stop behind the white line.
  • YIELD — red triangle pointing down. Slow down, give way to cross-traffic.
  • One Way — black-on-white arrow. Traffic only in arrow direction.
  • Do Not Enter — white horizontal bar on red circle. Wrong-way entry forbidden.
  • No U-Turn — black U-shape with red diagonal slash.
  • Speed limit — black numbers on white. Maximum km/h allowed.

3) Common warning signs

  • Curve / winding road — slow down before the curve.
  • Slippery when wet — reduce speed in rain or snow.
  • Pedestrian crossing — be ready to stop.
  • Deer / moose — watch for wildlife, especially at dawn/dusk.
  • Hill — steep grade ahead, may need lower gear.
  • Two-way traffic — road switches from one-way to two-way.

📝 Memory rule: Colour tells you why, shape tells you how urgent. Red = stop / prohibit, Yellow = caution, Orange = temporary, Green = direction, Blue = services, Brown = tourism.
