Understand Ontario's Graduated Licensing System and the requirements to pass your G1 knowledge test at the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO).
Ontario uses a two-step graduated licensing program to make sure new drivers gain real-road experience progressively:
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Minimum age | 16 years old |
| Vision test | Done on-site at the DriveTest centre |
| Knowledge test | 40 multiple-choice questions (computer-based) |
| Passing score | 80% in BOTH sections (Road Signs and Rules of the Road) |
| Fee (package) | CA $158.25 (covers G1 application, G1 test, G2 road test) — 2026 rate |
| Identity documents | Original passport, Permanent Resident card, study/work permit + Ontario address proof |
The G1 written knowledge test is delivered on a touchscreen computer at a DriveTest centre. It has two sections:
You must score at least 80% (16/20) in BOTH sections. If you fail one, you can usually retake only that section. Retest fee: CA $16.
💡 Tip: Take the official MTO Driver's Handbook and read each chapter at least twice. Practice with mock tests until you consistently score 90%+ in both sections.
