Are you preparing to drive in Manitoba and seeking a structured way to obtain your first Canadian driver's licence? The Manitoba Driver's Licence — Class 5 course is designed around the Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) Driver Licensing system and the Province of Manitoba road safety framework set out in the Highway Traffic Act. This English-language, A2-level programme guides newcomers, international students and young drivers living in Winnipeg, Brandon, Steinbach, Thompson or anywhere in Manitoba through every step of the licensing process.
This course is intended for first-time drivers, permanent residents, newcomers and youth aged 16 and over who want to obtain a Class 5 Learner (Stage 1) licence, progress to Class 5 Intermediate (Stage 2) and ultimately reach the Class 5 Full (Stage 3). It is also suitable for new Manitoba residents who arrive with a non-Canadian licence that cannot be exchanged directly. No prior driving experience is required.
At the end of this training, you will be able to confidently answer questions on Manitoba road signs (regulatory, warning, school, construction and information), apply the Highway Traffic Act rules on right-of-way, master Manitoba speed limits and school zones, understand MPI's strict zero-alcohol tolerance for all GDL drivers, comply with the supervised-driving requirements during Stage 1 and Stage 2, and prepare for the Class 5 Road Test. You will also learn how to book a knowledge test at any MPI Service Centre.
The MPI Class 5 Knowledge Test contains 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Manitoba Driver's Handbook published by MPI. You must answer at least 20 out of 25 correctly to pass (80%). The test is delivered at any MPI Service Centre, alongside a vision screening. After at least 9 months in the Learner stage (or 6 months with a Driver Education Course) you may book the road test for the Intermediate stage. After 15 months in the Intermediate stage with no driving suspensions, you graduate to Full Stage 3.
Total estimated study time is 40 to 50 hours, including theory review, lesson quizzes, a 25-question mock exam, and a full 50-question final exam reproducing the official MPI Class 5 Knowledge Test format. This progressive learning path prepares you effectively for the MPI Class 5 Knowledge Test and lays the foundation for the Manitoba road test.
Put this course into practice with an official-format mock exam.
